Playing Solitaire on Mobile: Tips for Touch Screens

2026-01-29

Solitaire works well on phones and tablets. Touch screens are natural for dragging cards and tapping piles. To get the most from playing on mobile, use these tips: choose the right game, adjust the layout, and protect your progress.

Choose a Mobile-Friendly Game

Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, and Tri Peaks all work on mobile. Games with fewer columns (e.g., Klondike with seven) fit small screens better than very wide layouts. Tri Peaks and Pyramid use compact layouts and tap-to-select, which suit touchscreens. Spider with ten columns may need scrolling or zoom—pick a site or app that scales the tableau so cards stay readable.

Portrait vs Landscape

Portrait (vertical) gives you a longer view of the tableau, which helps when columns are tall. Landscape (horizontal) shows more columns at once, which helps in Spider or when you have many piles. Try both and stick with the orientation that feels comfortable. Some games remember your choice; others reset—check the options.

Touch and Drag

Tap a card to select it, then tap a destination to move it—or drag the card to the pile. If you often mis-drag, use tap-to-move if the game offers it. For long moves (e.g., across the screen), tap is usually more accurate. Turn off animations if they slow you down or cause lag on older devices.

Saving Progress

Many browser and app versions save your game automatically (e.g., in local storage). Close the tab or app and come back later to resume. If you switch devices, progress may not sync unless the site or app has an account. For important games, check whether "save" or "resume" is available before you leave. Avoid clearing site data if you want to keep saved games.
