Spider Solitaire Strategies That Actually Work

2026-01-29

Spider Solitaire is winnable more often than many players think— if you use solid strategy. These approaches help you expose hidden cards, build in suit, and use the stock wisely so you win more games.

Expose Hidden Cards First

Face-down cards limit your options. Whenever you can, move cards to reveal new ones. Prefer moves that turn a card in a long column over moves that only rearrange already-visible cards. Empty columns are powerful because only a King (or King-sequence) can go there, so use them to free blocked cards or to temporarily hold a sequence. Do not fill an empty column lightly—make sure the move helps you expose or organize cards.

Build in Suit When You Can

In-suit sequences (e.g., 9-8-7 of spades) can be moved as a unit and eventually removed when complete. Mixed-suit builds cannot. So when you have a choice, add to an in-suit run rather than starting a mixed pile. That said, do not block important cards just to keep one run in suit; sometimes you must mix suits to expose a key card. Balance building in suit with keeping options open.

When to Deal from the Stock

Dealing adds ten new cards but can cover useful spots. Do not deal just because you are stuck—look again for moves you might have missed, including moving part of a sequence to create an empty column or to expose a card. Deal when you have truly run out of useful moves. In 4-suit Spider, the stock is especially precious; every deal can make the game harder, so use the cards on the tableau as much as you can first.

Keep Empty Columns for Kings

An empty column is the only place a King (or a sequence headed by a King) can go. If you fill it with a random card, you might later block a King. Try to keep at least one empty column when possible, and use it to unpack sequences or to free a needed card. In the endgame, empty columns are crucial for rearranging before you complete the last runs.

Summary

  • Expose face-down cards before dealing when you can.
  • Prefer in-suit builds, but do not block key cards for it.
  • Deal from the stock only when you have no better moves.
  • Use empty columns for Kings and for unpacking sequences.

Apply these strategies consistently and you will see your win rate improve, especially in 1- and 2-suit Spider. Four-suit will remain tough, but the same ideas still apply.
